How Co-writer Credits Work
Last updated April 2, 2026
Plotdrive offers two ways to use AI, each with its own credit system.
1. Co-Writer Chat → Plotdrive Credits
The Co-Writer assistant lives in your right sidebar (accessible via the icon at bottom-right of screen on desktop and laptop).
Co-Writer can brainstorm, coach, create documents, and organize files. It uses Plotdrive credits only (or your Anthropic API key if connected). Credits are included with your subscription or available for purchase as add-ons.
2. Tools → Your API Keys or Plotdrive Credits
In-document tools — Run Instructions, Continue, Fix It, and more — generate text directly in your manuscript.
You can power these with either:
Your own API keys (OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter) — pay the provider directly Plotdrive credits — for those who prefer not to manage API keys Key Distinction Co-Writer: full assistant → always uses Plotdrive credits (or Anthropic API key) Tools: direct generation → can use your API keys or Plotdrive credits
How Many Credits Do I Get?
Plan Credits Free Trial (7 days) 5,000 credits Pro ($39/month) 20,000 credits/month Team ($199/month) 80,000 credits/month Add-on packs Available for purchase anytime Monthly credits refresh on your subscription anniversary date — not the 1st of the month. For example, if you subscribed on January 14th, your credits refresh on the 14th of each month.
What Happens When I Run Out? If your monthly credits run out before your refresh date, you have three options:
Purchase an add-on credit pack — credits are available immediately after purchase Connect your own API key — go to Settings → API Keys to add an Anthropic or OpenRouter key Wait for your monthly refresh — credits reset automatically on your anniversary date
Tips for Using Credits Efficiently
Toggle off documents you don't need. Every toggled-on document gets sent to the AI as context, which costs credits. Only toggle on what the AI needs for the current task. Use shorter, focused prompts. A specific ask like "Rewrite this paragraph with more tension" uses fewer credits than "Rewrite my whole chapter." Consider BYOK for heavy usage. If you're writing daily and using AI heavily, connecting your own API key (Settings → API Keys) often works out cheaper and gives you unlimited usage at provider rates. Use the right tool for the job. Co-writer chat costs credits for every message. For quick in-document edits, use Tools instead — they're often more credit-efficient. Quick Reference
