Troubleshooting Common Issues
Quick fixes for the most common issues our writers run into.
Error: "SVR-502: Message content too long (max 50,000 characters)"
This means the text being sent to the AI exceeds the maximum allowed length.
Fix:
- Toggle off some documents in your sidebar to reduce the context size
- Work with shorter sections of text at a time
- If you're in Co-writer, start a new chat session (click the + button) to clear the conversation history
- Try splitting long documents into chapters — use "Split Chapters on Import" when uploading
Error: Rate limit exceeded (Anthropic/Claude)
This means too many requests or too much text is being sent within a short time window. The model provider is temporarily refusing requests.
Fix:
- Wait 1-2 minutes and try again
- Send shorter prompts or toggle off unnecessary documents to reduce input size
- If you're on a lower-tier provider plan, consider upgrading your usage tier at your provider's console
- This limit is set by the model provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.), not Plotdrive
Co-writer Won't Respond / Commands Won't Submit
Fix:
- Click the + button at the top of Co-writer to start a new chat session
- Try using Google Chrome — it provides the best experience
- Clear your browser cache and refresh the page
- If you're using your own API key, confirm it's still valid under Settings → API Keys
Editor Is Lagging or Unresponsive
Fix:
- Switch to Chrome if you're using a different browser
- Clear your browser cache and refresh
- If you have very long documents, try splitting them into chapters
- Close other browser tabs to free up memory
- Avoid having too many documents toggled on simultaneously
AI Prompts Keep Spinning with No Response
This usually means the AI model you're using is experiencing slow responses or an outage.
Fix:
- Switch to a different model using the AI selector at the top of your editor
- If using your own API key, verify it's still active and has available balance
- Refresh the page and try again
Login Email / Magic Link Not Arriving
Plotdrive uses passwordless login — you sign in via a magic link sent to your email.
If the email isn't arriving:
- Check your spam/junk folder
- Email providers like Yahoo and Cox sometimes delay delivery due to anti-spam filters. The email isn't lost — just temporarily deferred.
- Wait a few minutes and check again
- Try requesting a new login link
- Gmail and Outlook typically deliver fastest
Credits Not Showing After Purchase
Add-on credits may take 1-2 minutes to appear after purchase due to payment processing.
- Click your profile icon (top-right) and select "Credits"
- Look under "Add-on credits" — purchased credits appear there, separate from your monthly credits
- The app uses your monthly credits first, then draws from add-ons
- If credits still aren't showing after a few minutes, try refreshing the page
- If the issue persists, reach out to support with your invoice number
"I Changed My Model But Got Charged for a Different One"
The AI model selector at the top of your editor controls which model is used for document Tools. Co-writer chat uses Claude (Anthropic) separately — so you may see usage from Claude even if your editor is set to GPT. This is expected behavior. Each message in Co-writer uses Claude, which is reflected in your credit usage.
